Applications of radiation have shown significant development in many fields and become an indispensable technique especially for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in the field of medical care. Cytocidal power of radiation provides an effective method for sterilization and preservation of food, and its transmissive properties find extensive applications in non-destructive inspection. In another aspect, a wide range of researches are underway on biological effect of radiation in many fields such as epidemiology, animal trials and cyto-experiments.

For discussions on biological effect of radiation, this committee places special importance that they should be scientifically valid and supported by evidence. The principal objectives of this committee are: to play a hub function among the academic organizations across the various disciplines to facilitate scientific discussions on biological effect of radiation; to make a scientifically sound and industrially feasible proposal for establishing regulations on the use of radiation. The United Nations sets the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) supported by many participating nations, and some of the objectives have been achieved through application of radiation technology. The discussions on sustainability thereof should be based on science.

Biological effect of radiation is a complex subject that requires multidimensional scientific approaches. Although this subject presents a hard nut to crack, science-based approach should always be maintained in view of the balance between benefits and risks.
